  • What was one takeaway from this week's sermon for you?
  • Were there any stories, ideas, or points that stuck out?
  • Was there anything that challenged you?

INTRODUCTION

  • What’s something you thought would make life “better” or easier, but didn’t live up to the hype?
  • When you see someone who seems to “have it all together,” what’s your first reaction?
  • Where do you tend to compare your life to others the most (social media, work, family, etc.)?

We all have ideas of what “the good life” looks like, but those ideas are often shaped by what we see around us. Today we’re going to explore how Jesus redefines the good life in a way that flips our expectations upside down.

UNDERSTANDING

HAVE A VOLUNTEER READ MATTHEW 5:1–12.

  • What stands out to you about the types of people Jesus calls “blessed”?
  • Which of these feels the most opposite of what the world defines as the good life?

HAVE A VOLUNTEER READ ROMANS 14:17.

  • How does this verse redefine what the kingdom of God is really about?
  • How is this different from how people typically pursue happiness?

HAVE A VOLUNTEER READ JOHN 3:3.

  • What does Jesus say is required to see the kingdom of God?
  • How does this connect to the idea of transformation rather than just behavior change?

HAVE A VOLUNTEER READ MATTHEW 5:13–16.

  • What does it mean to be “salt” and “light” in everyday life?
  • What are some ways someone’s life can either shine brightly or be hidden?

Jesus lays out a picture of “the good life” that is completely countercultural and rooted in humility, dependence on God, and inward transformation. This kind of life doesn’t just change us; it shines outward and impacts everyone around us.

APPLICATION

  • Which Beatitude do you feel most challenged by right now, and why?
  • What is one comparison in your life you need to let go of so you can better recognize your own blessings?
  • What is one practical way you can “shine your light” this week through your actions or attitude?

PRAYER

Thank God for redefining what the “good life” truly is and for inviting us into His kingdom. Ask Him to help you let go of comparison and grow in gratitude for what He has already given you.
