Small Group Study

**SMALL GROUP LEADERS:  Some of the questions in this week's discussion have the potential to open the door to becoming political, which we try to avoid in our groups.  Feel free to skip any questions you feel might take your group in that direction.  **

INTRODUCTION
  • Try to stay biblical (not political) … what do you see as some of the most problematic moral issues in our culture today?
  • Can you think of a way that these problems could be corrected in the future with better parenting at home?  If so, how?

A quick read through the first chapter of Proverbs in the Bible and you will see the true heart of a parent shine through.  Written by a man who had experienced spiritual success and failure side by side, we see how desperate the need is for guidance for the next generation.  This is not only the job of parents, but a community of adults who see the future being the result of pouring into today’s youth.

STUDY
HAVE A VOLUNTEER READ ROMANS 12:1-3.
  • If we are to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, how does that impact the way we act?  In other words, what’s changed?
  • How does that impact the way we challenge the next generation coming up behind us?  (parents, mentors, teachers, etc.)
  • How do you know and discern God’s will for your life (short term and long term)?
  • In this passage… vs 1 says to worship God, vs 2 says to know his will for your life, and then vs 3 says to not think of yourself more highly than you ought.  Why do you think there is a warning about pride after a challenge to worship God and know his will?

Impacting the next generation is a theme we find throughout the Bible.  However, even more obvious in scripture is that we will fail to accomplish anything God desires for us unless we first allow ourselves to be regularly changed by God himself.  Before we can change the world or even our work or family environments, we must first do what it says in Matthew 6:33 – “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness and all of these things will be given to you as well.”

HAVE A VOLUNTEER READ ROMANS 13:1-7.
  • Is jaywalking a sin?  
  • Is rebellion against authority more of an action or an attitude?
  • Is it ever Biblically ok to rebel against the government?  If so, can you back that up with scripture?  Where’s the line?
  • Have you seen this passage modeled or ignored growing up, in a way that impacted your attitude toward authority?

Sometimes many of us wish we had the ability to add to or delete from scripture.  Too many, this is one of those sections that we might want deleted.  That is not an option.  God has said what he has said, and he meant it.  Our submission to authority is not based on a feeling regarding whether a ruler is good/bad, right/wrong, etc.  Our submission to authority is an act of obedience that is meant to stem from our love for and submission to God.  Our attitude toward authority will most likely determine our actions toward authority and will always reflect our submission to God.  Others who are young or younger in the faith are watching.

APPLICATION
  • Pastor Mike challenged us to assess ourselves on how well we are doing in bringing up the generations that are coming after us.  What are the two largest areas of improvement in your walk with Jesus that you need to be working on this week?
  • What is one tangible thing you can do this week to help bring up the next generations in a way that makes God proud?

PRAYER
Ask God to continue to transform your heart, and to show you new and better ways to model Christian character to those who are young and young in the faith.
