  • What was one takeaway from this week's sermon for you?
  • Were there any stories, ideas, or points that stuck out?
  • Was there anything that challenged you?

INTRODUCTION
  • Trivia buffs unite!  Did you know that the hole in the cap of some pens is actually a safety feature for people who chew on their pens?  What is something that you were surprised to find out it actually has a purpose (or a different purpose than you originally thought)?
  • Pastor Sean talked this week about how cheetahs are specifically designed to hunt and kill antelope and how their anatomy is different because of their purpose.  What is the strangest anatomical feature of an animal that you know helps them survive?

God is always purposeful.  He has designed so many things for us to marvel at.  The Bible says that even the rocks cry out to the existence of God.  We are part of that creation and he designed us with purpose.  We are fearfully and wonderfully made!

STUDY
HAVE A VOLUNTEER READ JOHN 15:1-6.
  • What do you think is the biggest difference between a Christian who bears fruit vs. one who does not?
  • How do you know you are producing fruit as a Christian?
  • If we are saved as a free gift of grace, why is bearing fruit so important?

Living on purpose as a follow of Jesus is absolutely paramount.  How tragic to exist your whole life and get to the end just to figure out that you could’ve been living!  You were put on this earth to (1) connect with God and (2) bear fruit.

HAVE A VOLUNTEER READ JOHN 15:7-12.
  • Does vs. 7 mean that God is like a genie granting wishes as long as we do good things?  What do you think it means?
  • Why is keeping His commands tethered to remaining in His love?  Does that mean His love is conditional?
  • Is loving one another like Jesus loves us different than loving people like we love ourselves?  If so, how is it different?

Intimacy with God is the only path to living with purpose.  We are called to love like Jesus and change the world in the same ways that He changes the world.  How can we love like Jesus without knowing Jesus intimately?  The answer -  we can’t!

HAVE A VOLUNTEER READ JOHN 15:13-17.
  • What does “laying your life down for your friends” look like in your life on a daily basis?
  • Does God calling you a “friend” change how you view your relationship with Him?

Laying down our lives for those around us is not necessarily a call to die as an act of love.  It is a call to LIVE as an act of love.  Laying down our lives means sacrificing our preferences and giving our time, talents and treasure so that others can experience Jesus and the life He has for them.  We are friends of God because we know His purpose for our lives and He reminds us daily as we draw close to Him.

APPLICATION
  • How can you better “remain in” Jesus?
  • How can you better “bear fruit” this week?
  • What can we as a small group do to help you accomplish these two things?

PRAYER
Ask God to give you tangible ways to draw extra close to Him this week and to show you specific things each day to love the people around you like Jesus.
