  • Were there any stories, ideas, or points that stuck out?
  • Was there anything that challenged you?

INTRODUCTION
  • What is the most amazing thing you have ever personally witnessed?
  • How did it change your life/opinions/perspectives/etc.?

For Jesus’ disciples a lot changed in a short amount of time!  After Jesus’ death, burial, resurrection, and ascension back to heaven, it is likely they thought most of the change was behind them.  But with the Holy Spirit dropping in on the scene, they quickly found out that change is synonymous with following Jesus.  As we follow Jesus more closely, we are compelled to adopt habits which show on the outside what the Holy Spirit is doing on the inside.

STUDY
HAVE A VOLUNTEER READ MATTHEW 7:21-29.
  • Based on this passage, how can you know that you will “enter the kingdom of heaven?”
  • How would you describe the wise and foolish builders in a way that might be more relevant in our current culture?
  • What does this type of wisdom look like for you in your life?

Intimacy with Jesus is the basis for wisdom and the driving purpose behind what we are called to be and how we are called to act as a Christians.  But the kind of intimacy with Jesus that will weather the storms of life and usher us into heaven in the end does not come without daily application and habits.

HAVE A VOLUNTEER READ HEBREWS 10:19-25.
  • What does it look like to “hold unswervingly to the hope we profess?”
  • If you’re able, share a time that another believer encouraged you (or kicked you in the butt) to do better in your relationship with Jesus.
  • Vs. 25 – Why is it so bad to neglect meeting together as Christians?  Why can’t we just take breaks when we feel like it?

As Pastor Mike said this past weekend, habits are a powerful thing.  Good ones can change your life for the better and bad ones can leave your life in shambles.  This is why God doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to demanding we create a life of good habits.  He loves us enough to call us to better.

HAVE A VOLUNTEER READ PSALM 63:1-8.
  • This Psalm is written by David to God.  What habits does it appear David might have had that increased his intimacy with God?
  • Does anything about this passage make you envious of David’s relationship with God?

If you read the full story of David in the Bible, you will find out that he was a pretty big screw up.  However, in Acts 13:22 we read that God calls David “a man after my own heart.”  What if your relationship with Jesus is defined by your default settings that you develop through good habits in your life?  What if your life could become what God would say represents a person after His heart?  This only happens when our hearts truly begin to hunger for a deeper relationship with Him and we act on that through forming daily habits to draw us closer to Him.

APPLICATION
  • What habits do you have that are regularly increasing your intimacy with Jesus?
  • What habits would you like to try to form this week to better accomplish this?
  • Has the Holy Spirit convicted you of any toxic habits recently that are harming your relationship with Jesus?

PRAYER
Ask God to apply more pressure to you than usual to  (1) stick to habits that are making your walk with Jesus stronger,  (2) adopt new habits to help your faith walk, and  (3) reveal & abandon toxic habits that are harming your relationship with Jesus.
