INTRODUCTION
  • If money wasn’t an issue, what would the perfect vacation look like for you?
  • What is the most relaxing and rejuvenating experience of your life?

God is serious when He talks about rest.  He doesn’t just recommend it; He commands it.  We may not always define rest the way God does, we do know that a life without peace and rest is not a good thing.  Physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health are impossible without occasional rest.

HAVE A VOLUNTEER READ EXODUS 20:8-11 .
  • Why do you think God is so serious about resting?
  • Have you ever misused or seen this commandment misused?  If so, how was it misused?
  • What is the difference between the type of rest God talks about versus the type of rest most people take (if there is a difference)?

God calls us to experience His best for our lives.  Rest is an undeniable part of that.  He has created us with a need to pull away from the stress of daily life and hide in His presence on a regular basis.  All of this is a call to greater intimacy with Him which nets the reward of peace and rejuvenation.

HAVE A VOLUNTEER READ EXODUS 20:7.
  • One of the driving points in Pastor Sean’s message this weekend was, “what we do and don’t do in God’s name matters.”  How is taking the Lord’s name in vain connected to Sabbath rest?
  • What is the greatest thing you have ever personally witnessed someone do in the name of God?
  • What is something you personally aspire to do in the name of God?

Taking the Lord’s name in vain has such a wide definition.  One could easily make the case for all of the commands being connected to it.  If we call ourselves Christians, we are connecting ourselves in name to Jesus.  That means all we do, think, and say is either honoring to God or taking His name in vain.  Striving to live out this command is a truly worthy goal.

APPLICATION
  • What can you do this week to ensure you experience the internal and external rest God desires for you?
  • What is one practical thing you can do this week to help someone see how amazing Jesus is because of your words/actions?

PRAYER
Pray that God will help you live up the title of “Christian” this week and bless you with His rest both internally and externally.
