  • Were there any stories, ideas, or points that stuck out?
  • Was there anything that challenged you?

INTRODUCTION
  • What is a scene from a movie that you would say shows what honor looks like?  (If you group has enough time, feel free to look some of them up on YouTube)
  • Who is the most honorable person you’ve ever known and what made them so honorable?

Webster’s Dictionary defines HONOR as “one whose worth brings respect or fame.”  That’s really what it boils down to… worth.  We are given the privilege and responsibility of establishing the worth of people and things in our lives.  So when God challenges us with the word honor, he’s calling us to reflect on the worth we assign to others.

STUDY  [tap on scripture to read]
HAVE A VOLUNTEER READ EXODUS 20:2-13 .
  • How can the theme of “honor” be woven through all of these commands?
  • How do you honor a parent that is not worthy of honor?
  • What are the most important characteristics for you to be (or become) a parent or person worthy of honor?

Showing honor to a parent would be easy if all parents were honorable.  Not resorting to violence would be easy if people didn’t act dishonorably and provoke you to rage.  God never challenges us to take the easy way.  He warns us that at times it will be difficult, but He calls us to greater because He desire an abundant life for us His children.  Showing proper honor to God and to others is a necessary piece to the abundant life He has for us.

HAVE A VOLUNTEER READ MATTHEW 5:17-26.
  • Share a time when your anger got out of control and caused you to do something you regret.
  • Jesus says that if you know someone else has something against you, you are to go and make it right.  Why is that so much more difficult than just forgiving someone who has wronged you?

Jesus challenges us to even interrupt our worship time between us and God when we know that conflict exists between us and others.  This means that showing proper honor and acting honorably in our relationships with others will always be intertwined with our relationship with God.  Hurt, anger, betrayal (etc., etc.) will always fight against the best life that God has for us, but He promises us that He has a “best path” laid out and will not leave or forsake us along the way.

APPLICATION
  • Who in your life is God challenging you to show a greater amount of honor?
  • Who in your life do you currently have conflict with that God is challenging you to take steps to resolve?

PRAYER
Pray that God will call you to honor Him more so that you will show greater worth to those He puts in your path.  Ask for the strength to resolve conflicts you may have with others, even if it might not be your fault.
