INTRODUCTION
  • In light of this week’s commandment “do not steal”… If you were planning a major heist  (1) what would you steal & why  (2) what three people would be on your crew & why?

Obviously fiction can be fun.  However, we live in the real world, and we are called to a better way of doing life.  This better way starts in each of our hearts and culminates in a blessed life.  Conversely, attitudes and desires of the heart we are warned by God to avoid (selfishness, discontentment & greed) will also culminate in a certain kind of life.

HAVE A VOLUNTEER READ JAMES 3:13-17
  • How does this passage relate to the commandment Pastor Kevin talked about this week (do not steal)?
  • When it comes to envy & selfish ambition, how has God called you out in the recent or not so recent past?
  • Which ONE quality in the final verse do you wish you were better at and why?

God loves us enough to be completely blunt with us when we need it.  Where we choose to blur lines and compromise ourselves and His standards, God draws very bold lines and establishes undeniable clarity.  He does this so that we can clearly see the path to the best life He wants for us.  We may hide the condition and desires of our hearts from others, but not from Him and not from ourselves.

HAVE A VOLUNTEER READ 2 CORINTHIANS 9:6-11.
  • Who is the most generous person you’ve ever personally known and what makes you view them as generous?
  • Is being generous something you feel and then do or is it something you do and then feel?  Explain why you see it that way.
  • Share a story of a time when either  (a) God blessed you because you were generous, or  (b) God blessed you so that you could be generous.

“Do not steal” seems like a pretty easy and self-explanatory command from God.  However, if we are honest, the attitude that results in theft (petty or significant) is something that infects us way before we commit an act of theft.  Generosity is something we can pursue and cultivate in our hearts to confront and prevent attitudes which will lead us away from the good life God has for us.

APPLICATION
  • What is a specific act of selflessness that you can do this week that group members can ask you how it went?
  • What is a specific area God is challenging you to increase your level of generosity (time, talent, or money)?

PRAYER
Pray that God will reveal negative attitudes and desires in your heart that are leading you away from the life He wants for you.  Ask him to cultivate more generosity, contentment, and selflessness in you.
