INTRODUCTION
  • What is the strangest or most unique tradition your family has at Thanksgiving or Christmas time?
  • Share a funny family story from your childhood.

Family is an interesting thing.  We give this title to the people we love the most, the people we’ve shared the most life with, the people who share our same roots and the people who have caused and shared tears with us.  Family is a gift.  No matter what our family of origin looks like, God extends that gift outside of legal and blood ties and into the Church.

STUDY  [tap on scripture to read]
HAVE A VOLUNTEER READ 1 TIMOTHY 5:1-8
  • Who do you have in your life that you would absolutely call family even though they technically are not?
  • If you’ve been doing this Jesus thing for awhile now, how have people in the church acted like family to you?
  • Why is this passage so harsh about providing for family?

How you take care of your family says a lot about you.  God gives us the gift of a Church family that can supplement our blood/legal family or at times even fill the role of missing family members in our lives.  However, He still keeps the bar high when it comes to caring for the family at home which will always be a priority.  We are called to and privileged with the care of ALL of our family: at home and in the Church.

HAVE A VOLUNTEER READ PSALM 78:1-7
  • Why is it so important for the Church and Christian families to focus on the next generations?
  • What are the best ways to pour into the lives of the next generations?
  • Whose life are you actively investing in?

Some things in life we are tasked with figuring out on our own.  This process of trial and error has a tendency to leave a lot of wounds and scars.  God never wants those who grow up in the Church to have to figure life out on their own.  We are told to TEACH, CORRECT, TRAIN and EQUIP those coming up with us and after us.  We use God as our template for the perfect parent and we make sure EVERYONE growing up in this family knows truth, love and that they are never alone in this life.

APPLICATION
  • Who are you regularly inviting to speak into your life and help you grow in your faith in Jesus?
  • Who is one new person you can begin forming a family-like relationship with so that they feel loved, equipped in the faith and supported?
  • How can you better provide for and support your family at home?

PRAYER
Pray that God would give you the heart of a parent, the humility of a child, and the loyalty of a sibling in your home and with your Church family.
