INTRODUCTION
  • What is your favorite Christmas memory?
  • Why do you think Christmas is such a special time in our culture and so many cultures around the world?

Thanksgiving has passed and we are officially in the Christmas season.  With so many things happening all around us personally and culturally, it is important to stop and reflect on why we celebrate this time of year.  Jesus entered the world, was born of the virgin Mary, was laid in a manger, and set out on a mission to show the love of God in a broken world!

HAVE A VOLUNTEER READ  MARK 1:1-8
  • What do you know (or have you heard) about John the Baptist?
  • How are we called to be like John the Baptist as Christians?
  • Like John the Baptist, sometimes we look strange to outsiders when we talk about God and Jesus.  What is the strangest thing you’ve ever seen a Christian do to tell people about Jesus that actually worked?

As followers of Jesus, we have a very specific mission.  We are called to do all that we can to bring little glimpses of God’s kingdom into this broken world.  This begins and ends with Jesus.  Sometimes our methods could use improvement, but our mission is unwavering.  By any means necessary, we must show & tell the world that Jesus loves them and came to fix what’s broken - starting in the hearts of people and spreading to the messed up world around us.  That’s Christmas!

HAVE A VOLUNTEER READ  LUKE 2:8-18
  • Why do you think God chose shepherds to be one of the first groups to hear the Good News about Jesus?
  • How did you first hear the Good News about Jesus?  Give as much detail as you can recall.
  • Have you ever shared Jesus with someone and prayed with them to ask Him into their life?  If so, share details.

For those of us who grew up watching Charlie Brown’s Christmas, reflections of Linus at center stage fill the mind when reading this passage.  An unlikely source telling a powerful story.  We are called to be the unlikely source from which the Good News about Jesus flows.  The Christmas season gives us a perfect segue into conversations about Jesus.  May we all be open to the divine appointments God gives us this season to tell people “Jesus loves you!”

APPLICATION
  • Who in your life can you invite to church this Christmas season?
  • Who are one or two people that you can be specifically working toward having a conversation about Jesus this season?

PRAYER
Pray that God would give you opportunities to notice people who need His love and the gentle boldness to speak the Good News as God opens those doors for you to speak.
