INTRODUCTION
  • What is a time when you felt completely and totally free and unburdened?
  • What is the difference between a burden and a responsibility (if any)?

Responsibility is a part of adult life.  It’s impossible to be a productive adult without shoulder at least a little bit of it.  Burdens, on the other hand, aren’t a requirement.  Burdens are a result of either our missteps or the missteps of those who wield influence in our lives.  God’s desire for us, which He willingly gives us the ability to accomplish through the Holy Spirit, is freedom from the burdens of life that so thoroughly weigh us down.

HAVE A VOLUNTEER READ  Galatians 5:13-21
  • How is freedom related to loving your neighbor?
  • If we are new creations in Christ, why do we still have such strong desires for the things of the flesh?

In many ways, it would be nice if our choices only impacted our own lives.  However, God has placed us in community, meaning our choices have ripple effects on those around us.  The acts of the flesh first damage our hearts, then our lives, and then those around us… sometimes for generations.

HAVE A VOLUNTEER READ  Galatians 5:22-26
  • What significance (if any) do you see in the word “fruit” being singular rather than plural?
  • Which of these areas (fruit of the Spirit) do have a hard time seeing the Holy Spirit working in your heart/life?

We all have areas of strength and areas of weakness.  The Holy Spirit’s indwelling launches toward that exact “better life” that Jesus called us to.  He doesn’t just give us correction, but gives us the full and complete life that we were created by our Heavenly Father to have.

APPLICATION
  • What is one thing you can do this week to embrace the fruit of the Spirit in your daily life?
  • How can your small group members pray for you to have freedom this week?

PRAYER
Pray that God would overwhelm you with His Holy Spirit and guide you toward a truly free life.
