  • What was one takeaway from this week's sermon for you?
  • Were there any stories, ideas, or points that stuck out?
  • Was there anything that challenged you?

INTRODUCTION
  • When is a time someone said something to you that encouraged and built you up like never before?
  • One a scale of 1 - 10, how encouraging of person are you?  Why?

“If you can’t say something nice…”  “Sticks and stones may break my bones…”  As much as we would like to believe that words are just words, that is simply not the case.  We have all been built up and tore down by those audible utterances of other people.  Taking ownership of what comes out of our mouths can be a gigantic step forward as followers of Jesus!

HAVE A VOLUNTEER READ  James 3:5-6
  • When is a time you said something that lit a fire of destruction you didn’t intend?
  • When is a time you changed the direction of your life with words that came out of your mouth (for better or worse)?

Fire is an appropriate metaphor for the words that come out of our mouths.  Fire can sustain life or take it.  So can we with our words.  The power of words is accented even further when we remember that Jesus’ title at the beginning of the book of John is “the Word.”  May our words reflect The Word to all those around us!

HAVE A VOLUNTEER READ  James 3:7-10
  • How have your words changed since becoming a follower of Jesus?
  • As a Christian, what is the danger in praising and cursing with the same mouth?

God loves us enough to call us to a life of integrity.  True integrity is when our thoughts, our actions, and our words are all in agreement.  May we embrace a higher level of integrity each day as we draw closer and closer to God and His will for our lives.

APPLICATION
  • Who has spoken negatively to you or about you that you need to work to forgive?
  • Who do you need to speak encouraging words to this week?

PRAYER
Pray that God would give you words of life to speak to everyone you come in contact with.
