INTRODUCTION
  • What was the style of parenting in the household you grew up in?
  • If your household growing up had formalized “commandments” what kinds of do’s and don’t’s would be listed?

All of us were trained up in the households we grew up in.  Some of our training was beneficial; and unfortunately, some was detrimental to our emotional, spiritual, intellectual, and/or physical development.  As we receive training from the Holy Spirit and seek to train up a whole new generation in our world, it is important that we contemplate what God says are the best practices for us and those we love.

HAVE A VOLUNTEER READ  Exodus 20:1-7
  • How are each of these three commandments most commonly broken in our culture today?
  • Which of these three commandments do you struggle most with and how are you doing currently in that area?

All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.  This we know to be true.  In just the first three of the Ten Commandments, pretty much all of us have to tap out of the perfection fight.  But thank God that His ultimate desire for us is not to hang our heads in defeat, but to have Him lift our heads to find Jesus and to find grace!

HAVE A VOLUNTEER READ  Exodus 20:8-17
  • What does Sabbath look like in your life and how can you work to improve your Sabbath experience?
  • Why did God give us these rules and what do you think is His heartfelt desire for us in giving them to us?

It is an absolute tragedy to diminish Scripture to simply a list of rules.  Our loving heavenly Father models for us parenting in giving us guidance.  Like a loving parent, the guidance is never for the sake of the guidance but for the sake of the love, health and happiness of the child… us!  May we seek to parent the next generation with same love and guidance God gives to us.

APPLICATION
  • What is something specific you believe God would command you to add to your life this week?
  • What is something specific you believe God would command you to begin avoiding this week to increase your mental, emotional, spiritual, or physical health?

PRAYER
Pray that God would train you up as His beloved child in new and intimate ways this week.
